Course Selection Rules

BS Lateral - English (Applied Linguistics)

Rules:

1.      Students enrolled in BS English (Applied Linguistics) Lateral will select courses subject to their scheme of studies and the limitations prescribed in the rules below: 

  1. For the first semester, a maximum of 15 credit hours is allowed.
  2. For second and subsequent semester(s), a maximum of 18 credit hours is allowed. However, in exceptional cases, the University may allow the student to take a maximum of 21 credit hours only if the student’s CGPA is ≥ 3.00 out of 4 & subject to the University’s standard academic regulations regarding course progression and completion.
  3. For the final semester, a maximum of 21 credit hours of coursework are allowed in addition to Research Project/ Fieldwork, subject to the condition that all degree requirements will be completed within the same semester and no other course selection rules, such as pre-requisite or specialization requirements, will be violated. 

Note: Students admitted through the bridging semester must pass all their bridging courses to be eligible for enrollment in the fifth semester.

Maximum limits prescribed for enrolment of credit hours include F’ or ‘D’ grade courses, if (any) enrolled. 

Students taking less than the course load prescribed by their scheme of studies will require extra semesters to complete the curriculum; in such cases they will also have to bear the additional cost. 

As per HEC’s Undergraduate Policy 2023 (Version 1.1) students with a two-year associate degree (ADP)/BA/BSC with at-least 45% marks or CGPA 2.00 out of 4.00 will be entitled to pursue BS English Applied Linguistics (Lateral) degree beginning from the fifth semester.  

Rules for Same Discipline:

1.      Students having a degree in same discipline i.e., English (with a specialization in linguistics, applied linguistics, ELT) will be exempt from the bridging semester.

2.      The minimum residency period for same discipline entrants will be four semesters.

3.      The maximum residency period for such students shall not exceed eight semesters, subject to the University’s standard academic regulations regarding minimum and maximum degree completion time.

Rules for Other Disciplines:

1.      Students who have completed an Associate Degree program/ two years BA/BSC program different (than mentioned above) will be required to study the bridging semester courses (mandatory). 

2.      The minimum residency period for such entrants shall be five semesters.

3.      The maximum residency period for such students, including the bridging semester, shall not exceed nine semesters subject to the University’s standard academic regulations regarding minimum and maximum degree completion time. 

 

Rules for Fieldwork/Internship  

  1. Students are required to complete a Fieldwork/Internship (ENG498) of 3-credit hours in the 4th semester of BS Lateral. In order to get enrolled for the Fieldwork, students must have: 

     i. Achieved a CGPA of 1.75 or higher 

     ii. Earned 21 or more credit hours (excluding bridging semester)

  1. Students are required to complete 6-8 weeks internship in any organization (school, college, university, writing, copyediting, translation work-based organization).   
  1. Students are required to submit a detailed Internship Report (IR) for evaluation and an Internship Completion Certificate (ICC) at the end of the internship program. 
  1. They are required to request their internship supervisor(s) to send a performance report of the internee by filling up the prescribed evaluation form and submitting it to the university. 
  2. There may be a viva voce examination based on the report submitted.

Note: Evaluation of the ‘fieldwork/Internship-ENG498’ will be graded. If a student fails to qualify the Field Work requirements, “F” grade will be awarded to the student.  

Rules for Capstone/Research Project 

  1. Students are required to complete a Capstone/Research Project (ENG499) of 3-credit hours in the final semester of BS. In order to get enrolled for the project, students must have: 

     i. Achieved a CGPA of 2.0 or higher 

     ii. Earned 36 or more credit hours (excluding bridging semester)

    iii. Passed ENG518 (Research Methodology in ELT) 

  1. Students are required to submit a detailed write-up of the capstone/research project and may have to appear for a viva voce examination. Only those students are eligible for the viva voce examination will pass the written work. 

Note: Evaluation of the ‘capstone/research Project-ENG499’ will be graded and if a student fails to qualify Capstone Project, “F” grade will be awarded to the student. 

Procedure of Course Selection: 

 In order to select your courses, follow the steps below: 

  1. From within the LMS, click the Course Selection link.
  1. Give preference to ‘F’ grade course(s) and the improvement of ‘D’ grades from the sixth semester onwards. 
  1. Click the check boxes to select courses. 
  1. Save the selection. 
  1. You may make changes in course selection any number of times before the last date to add, drop or replace course(s).
